App certification retirement FAQs

Q: What is happening to the App Certification program?
A: The App Certification program is ending in August, 2018.

Q: Why is the App Certification program ending?
A: The App Certification process is manual and delays app availability on Splunkbase, especially affecting app updates that required re-certification with every submission. Customers want to get new apps and app updates quickly.

Q: Does this mean that apps don't require any type of review before being published?
A: No, in addition to the automated process already in place to review apps before publishing on Splunkbase, all apps will be processed through AppInspect before being published, and apps that pass the automatic AppInspect checks will get a badge added to their app listing.

Q: Will there be any changes to the Splunkbase app submission process?
A: At the end of June, we will remove the ability to submit an app for certification from the Splunkbase app submission process.

Q: What happens to App Certification badges that appear in Splunkbase today?
A: Sometime in August, all App Certification badges will be removed from apps in Splunkbase.

Q: What replaces the App Certification badge?
A: A new AppInspect badge will be added to any apps that pass all of the AppInspect automated checks.

Q: How do I know if my app passes AppInspect?
A: You can run your app through AppInspect before submitting it to Splunkbase.

Q: What is the timeline?
A: By the end of June, you will no longer be able to submit an app for app certification in Splunkbase. In August, the App Certification badge will be removed from Splunkbase and developer documentation will be updated to describe only the AppInspect tool and Cloud Vetting processes.

Q: What do developers need to do?
A: Nothing. If your app is already branded with the App Certification badge, the badge will go away in August. All apps will be processed by AppInspect to determine whether they will have the AppInspect badge added to their listing.

Q: What happens to in-progress app certification requests?
A: Apps which have not completed certification by end of June will not continue through the certification process.

Q: What do I need to do when I submit a new release for an existing certified app?
A: Through the end of July, your app will need to have the badge removed before an updated version can be published.

Q: What about cloud vetting and getting apps approved for Splunk Cloud?
A: In order to have an app installed into a Splunk Cloud instance, it will still need to get vetted for Splunk Cloud. This process includes additional code and security checks required in order to protect customer data and Splunk Cloud instances. Cloud vetting happens when customers request an app to be installed in their Splunk Cloud instance.

Q: Will I still have access to leads?
A: Yes, all developers with an app on Splunkbase will have access to download leads for their apps. After certification ends at the end of July, all apps on Splunkbase will have access to download leads.

Q: Should I still mention Splunk Certification in my marketing material?
A: No, now that the program is retiring, it no longer makes sense to mention Splunk Certification when marketing your app.

Q: Can I remove App Certification from my shipping app, so that my updates can go out more quickly?
A: Yes, please make a request to appcertadmin to remove.
