Access download leads

Another benefit to developers who get their apps certified is access to download leads—contact information for users who download a certified app. This topic explains how to access download leads, what the leads consist of, and what you're allowed to do with the leads.

How to access download leads

You cannot access customer download information until your app has been certified by Splunk. For more information about certifying your app, see Submit an app or add-on for certification.

Once your app has been certified, to access information about the customers who have downloaded your app, do the following:

  1. Go to Splunkbase and log in if you haven't already.

  2. Go to your certified app's page on Splunkbase.

  3. In the blue banner at the top of the screen, click Manage App, as highlighted in this screen shot:

  4. On the app management page, click Leads from the navigation bar on the left.

  5. On the User Leads page, choose a date range, and then click Download.

Upon clicking the Download button, your browser downloads a .CSV file containing the download leads.

What the download leads consist of

The download leads for certified apps consist of basic customer information. This includes:

  • Version: The version number of your app that the user downloaded.
  • User Name: The name of the user who downloaded your app.
  • User Email: The e-mail address of the user who downloaded your app.
  • Download Time: The combined date and time this user downloaded your app, expressed in UTC according to ISO 8601.

Following is an example of a download leads file, as it would appear in a spreadsheet application:

Be aware that the number of downloads in the .CSV file may not correspond exactly to the number of downloads listed on your app's Splunkbase page. There are a few possible reasons for this:

  • The user opted out of sharing his or her contact information. Before a user downloads your app, he or she is presented with the following prompt:

This screen shot shows how the agreement first appears to the user. The user must select the I have read the terms and conditions... checkbox before the download can start, but the user also has the opportunity to select the checkbox to opt out of sharing his or her information with the app developer. If the user unchecks this box, his or her information does not appear in the download leads .CSV file.
  • Your app has been on Splunkbase since before November 2014. Splunk started collecting leads information around the beginning of November 2014, so any downloads from before that timeframe will not appear in the leads file.

What you can do with download leads

Download leads can be used in the following ways:

  • To send users supplemental information about using your app.
  • To contact users about technical issues you have discovered in your app.
  • To contact users about upgrades that are available for your app.

By submitting your app to be certified, you agree not to misuse any download leads you may receive. In particular, you cannot:

  • Share or sell user information. You must keep user information on a secure system and take reasonable measures to keep user information safe.
  • Subscribe users to any mailing lists, unless they have requested to be subscribed separately.
  • Send users unsolicited sales materials. This includes advertisements for other software products you might offer.
  • Send unsolicited bulk e-mail ("spam") to users.

If you fail to comply with these guidelines, the consequences may include losing the privilege to download leads or removal of your app from Splunkbase.
